UniSQ Japanese Pavillion

Authentic Japanese Architecture in Regional Queensland

Spanning 4.5 hectares, Ju Raku En (“to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place”) is one of Australia’s largest and most traditionally designed Japanese stroll gardens. Designed in Kyoto by master landscape architect Professor Kinsaku Nakane, the garden is a tranquil sanctuary built around a central lake, streams, and stone islands.

At the heart of this landscape is the central Lakeside Viewing Pavilion. Designed to reflect traditional Japanese timber joinery (Sukiya-zukuri), the pavilion serves as a focal point for visitors, ceremonies, and quiet reflection over the water.

However, constructing an exposed, open-air timber structure directly adjacent to a waterway creates a tough material challenge: continuous humidity, splashing, high UV exposure, and ground-level moisture.

Moisture & Movement

Traditional timber structures built in or around water feature distinct failure points over time:

  • Thermal & Moisture Movement: Seasonal swelling and contraction lead to opened joinery, warping, and structural twisting.

  • Surface Coating Failure: High moisture levels force paint or stains to blister and peel rapidly.

  • Rot & Maintenance Delays: High-traffic public assets require continuous sanding, sealing, and costly maintenance downtime.

To honour the precise, straight-line joinery of Japanese architecture while guaranteeing a decades-long service life for the University, the specifiers needed a high-performance material that behaved like timber, but defied the elements.

Britton Timbers supplied Accoya® for the pavilion’s structural timber elements. Modified through a non-toxic acetylation process, Accoya® permanently alters the cell structure of sustainable wood, preventing it from absorbing water.
