Sports-mad Melbourne demands the best in its facilities, whether it's for AFL, tennis, swimming or basketball. Two signature projects stand-out and both were undertaken by flooring specialists Rutty & Breacher of Watsonia, Melbourne: The Dandenong Rangers Sports Stadium Show Court and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre at Albert Park.
Featuring Britton’s Tasmanian Oak (Messmate) both projects required top class finishing and the most hard-wearing surfaces available in the market.
Managing Director Ken Breacher says his company laid the original Dandenong Stadium floor in 1982. “It’s worn extremely well, but it’s a show court and has endured constant use, so we were called in to update it about three years ago.” Ken says the impressive Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre Show Court was also in need of attention, but a different path was taken.
"We actually laid a new oak floor over the top of the old. The court had withstood heavy equipment over a long period of time, so laying a new floor over it was a practical and cost-effective solution."
Rutty & Breacher, and Britton Timbers, have combined on a number of significant projects – some quite far afield. Ken Beacher mentions the Whyalla Basketball Stadium as an interesting job where three courts were repaired and the Whyalla basketball community were hands-on in helping to pull-up the old floor.
"Basketball is big in Whyalla and the flooring project was very important to the basketball association. From all accounts they are delighted with the new floors."
