Seafarers Residences is a landmark architectural achievement in Melbourne, transforming the last remaining expanse of original Yarra River waterfront into a world-class mixed-use precinct, including Australia’s first 1 Hotel & Homes. The design, led by Fender Katsalidis, is a masterwork of complex geometry, blending modern innovation with the site’s maritime heritage. Situated in a highly exposed urban and coastal environment, the project required a façade material that was exceptionally durable, sustainable, and capable of achieving an intricate, high-tolerance aesthetic.
Looking for a high-performance timber for the extensive batten screens that wrap the upper residential levels, Fender Katsalidis turned to Abodo Vulcan, a thermally modified timber, was selected as the non-negotiable solution for several critical reasons:
- Exceptional Stability in Coastal Conditions: Given the site’s exposure to salt air and Melbourne’s volatile climate, Vulcan’s thermal modification process ensures superior dimensional stability (Class 1 durability). This was paramount to prevent warping and buckling, guaranteeing the longevity and structural integrity of the facade screening.
- Aesthetic Precision and Scale: The screens required extended, seamless lengths, with some sections reaching approximately 4.3 meters high. Abodo Vulcan was the only product that could achieve these single-length spans without the risk of movement typical of traditional timbers. We worked closely to supply a custom wave profile in a subtle, warm Protector – Straw finish, designed to echo the flowing Yarra River and integrate seamlessly with the precast concrete elements.
- Solar Regulation and Lightweight Design: The screens serve a vital functional role, acting as operable bi-folding elements to regulate solar heat gain on the west-facing facade. Abodo’s lightweight nature, compared to dense hardwoods, proved ideal for these large, moving elements, facilitating smooth operation and reducing load on the building structure.
Our partnership in supplying Abodo Vulcan Screening helped the Seafarers Residences achieve its vision of sustainable luxury. The timber delivers a necessary tactile, natural layer to the robust, monolithic architecture, ensuring the building is both environmentally responsible and visually spectacular. It is a powerful example of how New Generation Timber can solve complex architectural challenges in challenging environments.
